Bearden was born in his great-grandfather's house at Second and South Graham Streets in 1911. He had a lifelong interest in the rhythms and rituals of African American life.

Bearden, who died in 1988 at age 76, left Charlotte as a child and grew up in Pittsburgh and New York, where he formed his lifelong love of jazz.

In the fall of 2002, the Mint Museum of Art plans a Bearden exhibit of works in area collections. In September 2003, the prestigious National Gallery of Art in Washington will mount a major Bearden retrospective, its first for an African American artist.
