Residence of J.L. Staten
The postcard company misspelled the homeowner's name, but the house at 322 Hawthorne Lane is best known as International House. Begun in 1911 by Blythe and Isenhour builders, the house was completed in 1912 when James Lloyd Staten Sr. and his wife Lillian moved in. The Statens lived here until 1938. In 1922, Staten was president of J.L. Staten Co., a woman's apparel store at 209-11 West Trade Street. He was also part owner of Little Long Co.(mercantile), and secretary of Southeastern Land Co. In the 1950's, former U.S. Ambassador to Brazil Herschel V. Johnson lived here. Subsequently the residence became a funeral home from 1959 until 1986. St. John's Baptist Church nearby purchased the home and became a major sponsor of International House, a program center which promotes friendship and understanding for visitors and newcomers from foreign countries.
