North State Club (building on right).
Members of what is said to be Charlotte's oldest club, organized in 1884,
met in this structure on the southwest corner of Tryon and Fourth Streets.
In 1902 it had seventy-two members who paid $1.50 monthly dues. Described
as an "aristocratic institution," the roster read like a who's
who of professional and commercial Charlotte. New members paid $5
initiation fee, but inventors Thomas A. Edison and E. Howard received
honorary memberships in 1890. The club met at the Southern Express Co.
building, erected in the 1890s. |
