Formerly
Fullwood, was renamed in 1874 to honor an official of the Central Carolina Railroad.
Still, today the
railroad goes through Matthews.
The old Matthews
High School is being renovated to become Matthews Community Center, quite an undertaking.
Its across the street from Stumptown Park. Where once were shops that served the
basic needs of the townspeople are now attractive antique shops and galleries. Of historic
note: The Reid House. And the Farmers Market is the very best for organic vegetables
and goods made by the vendors.
Town
of Matthews. East of Charlotte near route 74, glimpse a classic Piedmont Carolina rural
mercantile village straight out of the past. Begun as a stagecoach stop, it later got its
name via the railroad, which, along with the cotton gin, fed the life of the farm town.
Shops and services. Summer market. The old depot is a restaurant and assorted red brick
buildings are made of bricks of local clay. Renfrows General Store is
outstanding.
