Aka City Within A City, Inner city, Old Charlotte, The Infield, Area 99

Main Roads: Trade and Tryon set directions for North, South, East and West

Hits:  Festivals and gallery crawls. Historic Districts, Downtown, Parks
Strikes: Newness. Moving out old for new, even in residential.

Profile: Traditional “grid” street pattern. Neighborhoods surrounding skyscrapers. Most residential space is within the city’s original wards of which there are four.

First Ward, the northeastern quadrant of the city lays claim to the Afro-American Cultural Center and to First Ward Place, a 350-unit complex uniting residents of varied income levels.Lots of attached housing.

Third Ward, in the southwest quadrant claims the stadium and hundreds of new attached housing. Fourth Ward is home to some of the city’s oldest homes and led Charlotte’s urban renewal in this, the northwestern quadrant.

At this time there is no such thing as Second Ward housing, the homes in this southeast quadrant were razed in the 1960’s. Uptown bustles with construction of attached housing. Throughout the infield, new construction. Relocating and dismantling older homes. A high-rise condo project is on the way.
