(2) - 404 N. Poplar St.
1979. This contemporary redwood home was designed to meet the
criteria of a lot which dictated up rather than out. Features greenhouse windows and a
meandering walk leading to the front entrance located on the side.

(8) - 221 W. 8th St.
1981. This curving brick wall outlines 6 townhomes. There are private gardens, decks, and
great views of the city skyline. A rear drive provides parking. Photo in

(9) - 423 N. Church St.
Davidson Square was constructed in 1981. There are 18 contemporary townhouses & 9
lofts. Sallie Davidson, a colorful 4th Ward resident earlier this century, lived on this
site.

(11) - 208-210 W. 8th St.
These 2 townhouses were added to the rear of a commercial building in 1982. Walled
courtyards provide outdoor space for these 3 story residences.

(12) - 500 N. Poplar St.
In four buildings, these 27 townhouses were completed in 1981. Its Georgian architecture
and attractive landscaping lends an air of Williamsburg to 4th Ward. Each unit has an
enclosed courtyard. Parking is on the interior of the block.

(13) - 501 N. Poplar St.
1977. While house appears to be a single family residence, it actually contains 2
apartments with decks and porches on front and back. A special feature is the sculpture
gardens being developed with various shrubs and plants interspersed between sculpture.

(14) - 505 N. Poplar St. & 310 W. 8th St.
1981. Residence faces 8th St. and business office faces Poplar St., joined by sun porch.
Office is designed to fit on a 38-ft. wide lot and meet all commercial codes. Contemporary
home with cathedral ceiling in LR and DR. The unique lot required planning and design to
include both home and business.
(16-17) - 515/517 N. Poplar St.
1980. This double home appears to join in the rear but is really two separate homes.
Providing adjacent but private homes for related families. The rear yard has a tennis
court.
(19) - 525 N. Poplar St.
Constructed in 1977 this was the first of 4th Ward's contemporary homes. The roof pitch
and lines reflect its Victorian neighbors on each side.
(22) - 201 W. 10th St.
Edwin Towers is one of three facilities for Senior Citizens in 4th Ward. The first
high-rise for Seniors providing activities, security & lovely grounds. It has 175
units. Opened in July 1976.
(23) - 301 W. 10th St.
This 50-year old apartment building was restored in 1979. Interior was returned to
original 39 units and sold as condos. Original hardware and woodwork was used in
restoration. *Local Historic Property"

(24) - 212-216 W. 10th St.
Built in 1982, Barringer Square was designed to complement its Victorian surroundings but
in a contemporary mode. It contains 18 Condos.

(26) - 300-324 W. 10th St.
1979. this complex was styled after the fashionable row houses found in many large cities.
The unique townhouses complement the idea of urban living. The owners have added many
personal touches which include stained, beveled and leaded glass. Some have roof gardens
with flower boxes peeking over the top.

(27) - 326 W. 10th St.
1913. House is in Classic Greek Revival Style. It was moved in 1981 to its present site
from a lot adjacent to First Methodist Church. The interior contains much of the original
woodwork and hardware.
(28) - 330 W. 10th St.
This building won an award for the firm that designed it. Completed in 1987.
(29) - Settlers Lane
1980. These 13 townhomes were the first of the new condos developed in 4th Ward. The brick
walks, curved street, and fencing all tie in with the Victorian design. They are planned
for privacy between the units.

(30) - Settlers Alley
1989. These nine townhomes orient to small alleys back to Settler's Lane. The 10th St.
side presents a grand façade to visitors entering the neighborhood. Brick and wrought
iron detailing provide glimpses of the manicured courtyards.

(31) - 615 N. Pine St.
1979. A U-shaped home, contemporary in style, that forms an area in the rear for a wooden
deck. Brick fencing in rear provides privacy.
(40) - 311 W. 9th St.
1929. originally a quadraplex. Renovated in 1975 into a single family residence. It
features an art studio and living quarters.
(43) - 323 W. 9th St.
1897. Originally constructed as a 4-room house and added on through the years, the attic
now boasts 4 additional rooms. Back decking and storage were added during renovation.
(48) - 517 N. Graham St.
Wellington Graham Shopping Center completed in 1988. Original buildings incorporated into
unique shopping.
(49) - 600 N. Graham St.
New construction in 1981. Tin roofs provide music when it rains. Parking and entrances are
inside the courtyard.

(50) - 410 W. 9th St.
Three buildings form a private courtyard with parking and entrances to these townhouses.
On the street side are vine-covered trellises. The wisteria blooms in the early spring
perfume the entire street.

(51) - 406 W. 9th St.
A narrow but deep lot provided space for this apartment building. It blends well with its
neighbors.
(53) - 522-524 N. Pine St.
Originally built and still being used as a duplex. This house was renovated in 1980. A
loft area in the rear added additional space.
(55) - 518-520 N. Pine St.
This duplex was renovated as originally built. The gables match other homes on the street.
(56) - 517 N. Pine St.
1980. Contemporary with Victorian flair. Crow's Nest designed to add height and to
complement the two tall houses beside it. Willow oaks in front are some of the oldest
trees in the area.
(57) - 512 N. Pine St.
Designed and built by the owner in 1976. it is a single family home with a commercial
studio. The house is oriented around a two-story living room with views directed towards rear yard
for privacy.
(64) - 423 N. Pine St.
1989 This 3-story residence draws from neighborhood details to blend into its
surroundings. There is a commanding view of Charlotte's skyline from its rooftop windows
walk.
(65) - 409 W. 8th St.
1984. This five-unit building reflects the design of the earlier
quadraplexes across the
street.
(66) - 402-404 W. 8th St.
Originally a red brick quadraplex, the building now has two separate homes. Both have
front and side entrances encircled by pierced brick wall.
(67) - 410A, B & C W. 8th St.
Three-story townhouses. Contemporary in style with 2nd and 3rd floor balconies. Interior
has large open spaces.

(68) - 412 W. 8th St.
There are 4 apartments in this building. This building is the same as #66. At one time
there were 3 identical buildings in a row. Now only 2 are left.
(69) - 500-512 N. Graham St.
1980. These sharp-peaked roofs show a Victorian flavor, but up on the roof you see modern
technology. Patios and a rear gazebo provide outdoor living.
(70) - 413-433 W. 8th St.
This is the largest infill condo project in 4th Ward. It consists of 105 units. Great care
was taken by the developers to preserve as many of the old trees as possible. The
architects won an award for their design.

(71) - 415 W. 7th St.
1981. A deep, narrow lot needed a different approach to put in 9 condos. Note the 2-story
windows which flood the interior with light.

(72) - 318 W. 8th St.
1979. This Victorian flavored, contemporary solar house is designed around a central
atrium with private front-walked courtyard. Entrance to house faces side yard.
(74) - 401 N. Poplar St.
1977. Complex built for housing of elderly, handicapped and disabled. There are 128
apts.
With security and alarm systems to accommodate the needs of tenants. Borders on
beautifully landscaped 4th Ward Park.
(75) - 328 W. 6th St.
1982. This building was constructed in 1982 and won a N.C. Architectural Award for design
in 1983. There are 8 condos which enjoy balconies and/or walled patios.

(76) - 229 N. Poplar St.
1878. Charlotte's first hospital opened in May 1878 an operated until 1940. In 1981 the
entire building was completely renovated to become condominiums. Many rooms retain the old
brick walls and beams that have seen more than a century of change. *National Register of

(77) - 224 N. Poplar St.
1980. Completed in June 1980. This building contains 30 condos. The rear overlooks
Settler's Cemetery providing a lovely scene in spring of many blooming azaleas. The view
from different floors varies from the church steeple on the lower floors to an exciting
cityscape from the upper floor.
