Plaza Midwood

“Between 1910 and the 1950s, this north side neighborhood grew first as another streetcar suburb, then appreciated as the winding, shaded entry to the prestigious Charlotte Country Club. The main boulevard of entry, called The Plaza had a streetcar track down its center in what is now a grassy median.

Mary Norton Kratt,
Writer

One of the two remaining grand Victorian dowager mansions from the 1890s uptown Charlotte was moved here and is the boulevard’s crowning glory complete with turret and gingerbread trim. The Van Landingham Mansion down the street built in 1914, when The Plaza was merely a “ narrow dirt road surrounded on both sides by a large strawberry farm”, is known for its elegant rhododendron and azalea gardens. The neighborhood’s handsome mix of lovingly restored large and modest houses among old dogwoods and willow oaks is most appealing.”
