Gateway Homes has started a 45-unit townhome
project in Sedgefield within walking distance of a planned light-rail
station.
The proximity of the 3-acre site to the proposed
New Bern Street Station off South Boulevard influenced Gateway's decision
to develop Sedgefield Station, said company president Doug Levin.
The project, on Weston Street just off Greystone
Road, is within three blocks of 3030 South at New Bern Street Station, a
$19 million urban village planned at the transit stop by Crosland Heath
Partnership.
The south transit line, a 10-mile link from
uptown to near Pineville, will roughly parallel South Boulevard. Trains
are expected to start running on it in 2006.
"Our townhomes are connected to the
Sedgefield neighborhood, but they're still close enough to the tracks for
residents to leave the car in the garage and ride the train to work,"
Levin said.
The two-story units, about 1,300 square feet with
two bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths, are selling for $105,000 to $109,000.
Levin, who said nine people have signed purchase
contracts, expects the first units to be completed by June.
The townhomes were designed by Cline &
Associates of Raleigh with front porches, columns, shingles, brick and
siding to resemble Dilworth homes.
Large, open floor plans include a master suite,
separate dining and living areas and a kitchen. Eight buildings will be
clustered around 40- to 50-foot-wide courtyards. Single-car garages open
on rear alleys.
Levin estimates the value of the project at $5
million. More information is available on the Web at
