Contracts, the most current measure of activity, were up 8 percent from the same month in 2001. Closings, which follow contracts by about six weeks, were up a stunning 27 percent. Realtors said earlier that they had a busy December, as buyers rebounded from the impact of Sept. 11 and the lingering recession.
