Charlotte's Historic
Architecture
The history of Charlotte's downtown architecture is rich and diverse. Classical buildings
dominated the center city skyline during much of the past century. In recent years that
heritage has been decimated as modern buildings replaced those of the past. Among the more
important historic preserved buildings are churches such as the gothic revival Grace AME
Zion Sanctuary on Brevard St, St. Peters Episcopal Church on North
Tryon, and the landmark
First Presbyterian on West Trade with its full city block site. The Mecklenburg County
Court House by Louis Asbury, and the City Hall Building by Charles C. Hook, on East
Trade St., are notable examples of Charlotte's remaining heritage.
